Registering on this forum: What does the L stand for in SFL

Post by Hayo »

A while ago I ran into an old sof1 player on Clash of Clans. We talked for a while and he told me he would join the community on sof1.org. I never seen him afterwards. Now I just checked what questions are being asked when you register and this is one of them:

What does the L stand for in SFL?

Can we change this to something easier so we wont block out actual people that try to join us? For example the Raven tweete right now. If someone decides to register they might not be able to.

3+3 wont work seeing bots are smart. I believe they can even google for awnsers so it will have to be harder than that.

Isn't the forum full of bots already anyways? (if you look at the bottom of the homepage)

I'd make it something easy:

Question: Fill in the blank of this song
"Kick me baby one more xxxx"

No way bots are Britney fans.

Those bots at the bottom of the forums do no harm. They only scan websites for searchengines. With bots I ment those registering and posting viagra spam kinda crap. I think I suggested this one before: Who is the main character in SOF1's singleplayer?

They can, anything searchable is a no no.

This was used for over a year and worked well but the answer must have eventually made it's way into a database of answers somewhere as there was a sudden big increase in spambots registering in a matter of days.

Hope they don't take a dislike to the community edition!

Those bots are classed as special registered users (in the eyes of phpBB) Each legit bot like them will use one or two IP ranges so one bot not in the Bot group on the forum would be able to visit the forum as a guest - potentially 512 times each (two IP ranges) over a 24hr period.

Anyone with a decent non searchable question, just say it.

I had a hard time registering, it took months and I was one of them guests for a long time before that too.

A lot of those have been broken, https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtop ... &t=2122696" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Tried a few before which worked for a while, but not this one. I'll try it later today.

Blimey! What was the question then?
There's a board contact form on the portal for guests/reg users which posts directly to the staff forum too, maybe it should be more visible: http://www.sof1.org/contact.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Edit: Keifer, I just took a closer look at that reCaptcha, it's just a tick the box type, a 50/50 chance of getting it right.
No good.

Question was :
Who is the leader of the EF Clan (castro)

I actually typed then deleted suggestion to have something that stands out.

Seen reCAPTCHA in other forums with no "bot" problems but they use vbulletin!

How about an Invite feature/ software added with a separate registration page alongside the "open" registration? That should help in Hayo's case!
