New and Fresh Meat

Post by jgarbe »

Totally New, Fresh Meat to the game. I've played MOHAA and derivatives with the ID Engine for years. Am an Administrator of a church Gaming Group. We would like to try and play this game in a LAN Party first (I'm sure we'll fumble around miserably). Any tips and tricks to get a good LAN server up and running would be helpful. I'm still not sure how to play the game....

This might help some, http://sof1.megalag.org/serverguide/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It's mostly these files that needs some attention to what you want to configure.

Code: Select all

user-server/dedicated.cfg
user-server/sofplus-cvars.cfg
user-server/sofplus/sofplus_sv.func
My "sofplus-cvars.cfg" looks like this.

Sauron:

Thanks! We had our first taste of the game last night. We just used the GUI to start the LAN game. We only played CTF but really enjoyed the game. We were totally lost in the maps. I couldn't tell you how many times I was running in circles and yelling, "I was just here!!!!" Haha

Things we changed for control acclimation included:
The Attack2 needed to be moved to Mouse2
The Jump needed to be moved to Spacebar
The Use needed to be moved to E
I'm not sure if there is a benefit to the native control buttons but this seemed to make the game better for our group.

I'll check out the dedicated server stuff. Any really cool hacks will be appreciated as well. I usually do MOHAA linux dedicated with all kinds of hacks.

We played a round of "no guns-- only knives" CTF and were laughing so hard!

If you have SoFplus game running* (Community edition also has this) it wouldn't be advisable to "use the GUI to start the LAN game."
(I remember Forum user / SoFplus creator: "3klnk4jh" saying something like this but can't find it anymore.)

Not sure what you mean by "hacks" I think you mean mods?
Hacks/Cheats aren't shared on here and I think it isn't allowed as well. (Wallhack, Aimbot, etc.)

base folder -> create file autoexec.cfg -> open it with notepad -> adding these lines will rebind the controls. this way you don't have to reconfigurate each and every PC.

Code: Select all

bind mouse2 "+attack2"
bind space "+moveup"
bind e "+use"
Small maps you wound't get lost in as easily are (may need mappack)
dm/sudctf1
dm/jpnctf1 or dm/jpntclx
dm/aztec2
dm/iraq_small
exp/fractf2

* How do I know if i have SoFplus running ?

Sauron, awesome stuff!!

Thank you for correcting me-- yes, "mods" is the correct term I'm looking for.

I can't wait to start the dedicated with the binding controls. That makes so much sense!
Thanks again, you're a great mentor.

Good to hear people still have fun playing this game. I'm not the technical mind Sauron is, but you can find some fun stuff herev (though some of it might be outdated):
https://gamefront.online/files/listing/ ... of-fortune" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

For complete maplists, view these topics:
CTF: http://www.sof1.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=93" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
DM: http://www.sof1.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=258" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Also, there's this page Persian made some time ago, no ideaa if it's still up to date but it's worth a look:
http://mods.sof1.org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Some maps which should be easy to start with next to those of sauron:
CTF:
dm/rp_barnstorm
dm/sewerctf1
dm/nycdm3
dm/iraq

Once you get the hang of it, you should try the following maps, which are some of the best around in my opinion:
dm/dust2002
dm/gicctf
dm/egypt2003
dm/marocctf1
dm/irqctf1

Some fun maps to play if you just want to mess around:
dm/rdam_skateordiectf (makes you feel like you're on a skateboard, you can grind on rails or jump in halfpipes)
dm/mazecraze (I think this is the one with a shitload of boobytraps in the map which is quite fun, you'll be cut in half by lasers or squished by a wall)
dm/football or dm/dogbowl (basically a football field, a touchdown is a cap. Should be fun for you Americans)
dm/jpnwall (invisible walls)
dm/trainfrag (you'll play on a moving train, you fall off, you die)
dm/trenches (I believe this is the map with minefields around)
dm/ctf3 (moving platforms in the middle of the map which is a pretty fun feature)
dm/ctf_andactionsofb (a map with thick fog which causes enemies to pop up out of nowhere)

There's also a map in which you can fire cannons at eachother but I forgot the name unfortunately...

There's also a game mode called Bunnytrack, which is basically map with all kinds of jumps in it which requires a good amount of movement skill. Not my thing but a lot of people had a good time with it in the past. Maps can be found here:
http://www.sof1.org/download/maps/Bunnytrack_maps.rar" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And please, try dm/ddayctf 3 vs 3 and share your experience :mrgreen:

Have fun playing
